Thanks to Pinterest, I came across this series of MINIMALIST PIXAR MOVIE POSTERS by Behance user WONCHAN LEE. A few of these posters are really cute, a few I have issues with, but overall a nice set. They can also be purchased HERE.

This is quite possibly one of the coolest animation projects I’ve ever seen. ABCINEMA features quick animations depicting a famous movie for each letter of the alphabet. I’ve watched it three times and still can’t name every movie – though I think I keep missing a few letters because they go by so quickly. It’s very cool how animator EVAN SEITZ moves from one letter to the other and also incorporates the letters themselves.

The personal artwork of the talented artists and animators at DreamWorks Animation is put on display in the new publication Moonshine: Artists After Dark. The video below intros the book and gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the artists and their work. Amazing work which almost makes me wish I was back in drawing classes and not in front of my computer. Almost.

The second part of the PBS ARTS series Off Book, is simply titled “TYPE”. The seven minute video – which includes interviews with Jonathan Hoefler & Tobias Frere-Jones, Paula Scher, Eddie Opera, Deroy Peraza and Julia Vakser – is very educational especially to people who haven’t taken a typography class. Especially informative is the animated infographic of sorts at the end of the video. I hope some of the typography teachers at RIT will show this video on the first day of class!

JONNY QUEST, the 1964 Hanna-Barbara cartoon is a classic – as is its jazzy theme song. I must admit that I myself hopped on the Jonny Quest bandwagon with the 90s revamp that used to air on Cartoon Network. Anyway, point at hand is that this awesome guy from Texas, ROGER D. EVANS, created a claymation stop motion version of the original JQ intro. And it’s AWESOME. Embedded below is the stop motion video, original 1964 intro, and for my own amusement, the intro to The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (circa 1996). Questworld forever! Also, no two ways about it – Race Bannon is a badass.

The monologue by Mike Lacher isn’t new (though I can’t find the exact date it was written), but “I’M COMIC SANS, ASSHOLE” is one of the funniest short imagined monologues I’ve ever read on comedic writing site MCSWEENEY’S. What IS new, is the stop-motion video by JOE HOLLIER that now accompanies the potty-mouthed Comic Sans fighting back against all his haters. Potentially NSFW, but it’s worth it.

A busy work week followed by a week of vacation means it has been far too long since my last blog post! I figured I’d start it back up right with something pointless but surprisingly entertaining! That’s right, this is Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid dubbed over with the trailer for Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. I just want to know who thought up this mash-up in the first place?!

Holy Digital Downloads BatBird! Yes, it’s the Batman-Angry Birds mash-up you didn’t even realize you were waiting for. Complete with angrier-than-thou Christian Bale Batman voice! Created by BITE.CA, which is apparently a Canadian television comedy channel (see details below the video if your curious).

SMASHING MAGAZINE recently posted an excellent dissection of Toy Story 3‘s successful media campaigns before, during, and after the film’s release. One of the campaigns they mentioned was Disney-Pixar’s attempts to secure Toy Story 3 a Best Picture nomination (and win) at the Academy Awards. Disney-Pixar used stills from the movie paired with the tagline “Not since [insert past Best Picture winner here]…”. The whole poster collection can be seen on WALT DISNEY STUDIOS special awards website, along with more background information on the movie and its creation. A few of my favorite posters can be seen below.
Gnomeo and Juliet, the animated retelling of Shakespeare’s classic tale through the medium of garden gnomes, is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen recently. No crude humor, just sharp wit and great animation. Clever premise, great soundtrack and score featuring the music of Sir Elton John, plus Jason Statham as a badass Tybalt. Poor guy is typecast even in the gnome world! Bonus, they have a cute title logo. Overall, a great movie for viewers of any age. But avoid 3D – there weren’t enough effects to make it worth the extra cash. Planning to see the film or have a review to share? Comments are open.
